Faemina

Coffee machine usability redesign

This project, in collaboration with Faema, aims to redesign the experience with the Faemina luxury coffee machine, designed on the possibility of complete coffee customization for the user.

After experiencing the usability problems of the current interface, given by buttons inconsistent with their function and a laboriously navigable menu, it was redesigned in two solutions, proposing an "Easy fix" and a "Disruptive" version to the company.

Finally, building on the concept of coffee making as a dance, the redesigned experience proposes a series of lights, placed at key points of objects, which help the new user, and dance along with the more experienced one.

The “Easy Fix” proposal refines the existing LCD interface by introducing clearer, more intuitive icons and analog controls to simplify menu navigation and reduce reliance on the instruction manual. Addressing the limits of static buttons, this approach enhances user control while preserving the current layout.

The “Disruptive” proposal reimagines the machine with a high-resolution circular display and subtle animated lights, giving it a dynamic, almost living presence. Interaction is centered around a rotary push knob with haptic feedback, emphasizing manual gestures and the ritual of coffee brewing.

To support both concepts, a companion app was designed  offering detailed recipes and technical insights and a simplified experience for guests and beginners.
